Baton Rouge, La – September 12, 2016 – LSU junior and Houma native, Megan Manno, was awarded the TD Ameritrade Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Each year, the TD Ameritrade Scholarship is awarded to students involved in financial planning programs. Manno is a junior majoring in accounting, and is involved in the Certified Financial Planning Program at LSU. In addition to receiving the scholarship, Manno was awarded the opportunity to ring the Nasdaq Market Bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Manno said it was an experience she would never forget, “It was incredible, it was something that was on my bucket list for a long time and to be able to achieve it is something I’m extremely grateful for.”
Manno believes that it is through her involvement at LSU that she has had the opportunity to pursue the TD Ameritrade Scholarship. She said, “The spirit of LSU is unmatched and it was something I wanted to be a part of.” Manno continued, “I knew LSU had great academics, specifically the business program is what interested me.” It was a faculty member’s encouragement that persuaded Manno to apply for the scholarship.
Throughout her time at LSU, Manno has taken on many leadership roles. In addition to being a student, she serves as a Tiger Transition Team (T3) mentor. As a T3 mentor, Manno serves as a peer point-of-contact for an incoming first year student to help them find the same success that she has found at LSU. “It is my second year being a mentor,” Manno said, “It’s been a rewarding experience to help the first year students acclimate to campus and find their niche at LSU.” Manno also served as a Bengal Bound Leader for the official welcome week of LSU, where she helped welcome the class of 2020 to the campus community.
In addition to her role as a student leader at FYE, Manno is also involved in the Student Financial Planning Association and the Student Finance Association. She also serves as the vice president of Tiger Remedy, a student volunteer organization. She is also a Distinguished Communicator Candidate.
Since winning her scholarship, Manno has been inspired to pursue more leadership and volunteer opportunities on campus. “I feel being awarded this scholarship has opened up new doors for me, and I am grateful for the involvement I’ve had at LSU.” She continued: “I’m inspired to get more involved on campus and to continue to learn and make the most of my time here by utilizing the resources on campus because it is through LSU that I got this wonderful experience.”
Manno’s favorite part of her LSU experience is being a part of a community that acts as a family, and experiencing the love on campus. “I think it was demonstrated when the flood happened, and while you see it with football on Saturday nights, it’s seen more when people are in want and need and the community is there to help.” She continued, “Just to be able to be a part of that and to work with others that way, it truly means a lot.”
